REMO – OUR HERITAGE
(TRADITION, ARTS AND CULTURE)
Remo History
Up until 2015, it was difficult finding a book specifically published on the history of Remo by any known authority. We are aware that there are some vague reports of Remo in some books written on Yoruba or other Yoruba groups such as The History of Yoruba by Rev Samuel Johnson and The Ijebu of Yorubaland, 1850 – 1950: Politic, Economy and Society. It was in realization of this that Late Alayeluwa Oba (Dr) Adeniyi Sonariwo in 2011 commissioned a historian from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Dr. Tunde Odunlami to do a thorough research and write a book on the history of Remo. The book Remo in Yoruba History: Politics, Inter-group Relations, Socio-Economic Dynamics was subsequently published by Tanus Books in 2015.
Following this, Chief Olaniwun Ajayi wrote a book Remo and its Neighbouring Powers which was published by the University Press Plc. in 2016
Apart from these books, the Martindale Commission of Inquiry Report of 1937 has always been a reference material for information on Remo especially the history of the various town in Remo. However, it was discovered that most of the copies found and in circulation were photocopies of photocopies and were not always very clear. The Remo Forum under the Chairmanship of the late Pa. Olaniwun Ajayi in 2008 had the report published by Evans Brothers (Nigeria Publishers) Limited in hardcover.
It is our recommendation that the book should be reviewed to determine other areas not covered and if need be, publish a another to complement that.
